Huangshan Formation

Huangshan Fm

Period:
Cambrian

Age Interval:
Nangaoan through Paibian (middle and late Cambrian), (8)

Province:
Xinjiang

Type Locality and Naming

Type section Huangshan Formation is the No. XVI section in Kawabulak area, measured between Huangshan Hill and Huishan Hill. The section lies 2 km west of the Huangshan Hill (91°43'20” E, 41°24’50” N), southwest of Kawabulak, Shanshan, Turpan, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. In the type section, the formation is 121 m thick. Huangshan Formation was first published as Huangshan Group by Chen (1979). The name is derived from Huangshan Hill in Kawabulak area, Shanshan City (county level), Turpan City, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The name was firstly appeared in a 1976 manuscript by the Compiling Group for Xinjiang Regional Stratigraphical Scale (1981), who published the manuscript two years later than Chen did. Subsequently, Cai (1999) lowered the group in rank as Huangshan Formation.

Lithology and Thickness

The Huangshan Formation is basically a clastic sequence, consisting mainly of brown sandstone, tuffaceous sandstone with interbeds of limestone. In the type section, the formation is divided into three lithologic beds, from bottom up: (1) grey, white and purplish red quartzose sandstone, sandy limestone and basal conglomerate, containing unstable ferromanganese and cellophane nodules (5 m thick); (2) brownish green, thin-bedded medium-grained tuffaceous sandstone, black siliceous rock, inhomogeneously interbedded with yellowish sandstone and siltstone (32 m); (3) brown and pink, thin- to medium-bedded medium-grained sandstone, siliceous rock and siliceous shale, intercalated with limestone (84 m).

Lithology Pattern:

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The Huangshan Fm is in disconformable contact with underlying Mesoproterozoic Kawabulak Gr. The lower boundary of the formation is defined by the disconformable plane below the basal conglomerate, of the formation

Upper contact

The Huangshan Fm is conformably overlain by overlying Nanhuishan Fm. The upper boundary is defined by lithological change from the brown sandstone at the top of the formation to the siliceous rock at the base of Nanhuishan Fm.

Regional extent

The Huangshan Formation is exposed in Southern Tianshan Area of Tarim Region, restricted to the area of Huangshan, southeast of Kawabulak, western Xinjiang. The formation is stable in lithology, and its thickness decreases eastward, ranging normally 90 to 263 m.
